Japan's First Military Satellite Launched as Tensions Rise

Japan's First Military Satellite Launched as Tensions Rise

The Kirameki-2 satellite is one of three military-oriented satellites that will replace three civilian analogues now used by the Japanese military.

The Defense Ministry's first communications satellite was launched Tuesday afternoon in a program aimed at upgrading the Self-Defense Forces' ability to better cope with security challenges.

The satellite was launched through Mistubishi H-IIA rocket from southern-most islands of Japan, an area in which Tokyo and Beijing have clashed over the gas-rich East China Sea.

Japan and China has territorial dispute over some uninhabited islands called Senkaku in Japan and Diaoyu in China.

According to a spokesperson for Mitsubishi Heavy industries, which built the launcher, the rocket successfully entered orbit.

Under Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, the military is operating further from Japan's home islands as it takes on a bigger role to counter growing Chinese military activity in the region.

The satellites are one of three arranged supposed X-band satellites, that will fourfold broadband limit, bind together a broken and overburdened interchanges organize and permit correspondences crosswise over more domain.

Japan, the main U.S. ally in Asia, is concerned that a recent increase in Chinese military activity in the area is a sign it is looking to extend its military influence from the neighboring South China Sea as a challenge to United States maritime dominance. Japan's government is hopeful that the satellite launch will improve military communications with improved technology, protecting them from Korean missiles and other threats from China.

The ministry plans to position the Kirameki-2 over the Indian Ocean and expects the satellite to also be utilized by SDF personnel taking part in United Nations peacekeeping operations in South Sudan and those participating in an anti-piracy mission in waters off Somalia, it said.
