Top 5 questions for new Bills HC Sean McDermott

Top 5 questions for new Bills HC Sean McDermott

The Buffalo Bills have agreed to hire Sean McDermott as their next head coach to replace Rex Ryan, who was sacked before the team's Week 16 game.

McDermott has spent the last six seasons as the defensive coordinator for the Carolina Panthers (6-10) where he has built a sterling resume.

The 42-year-old's experience holding several position coaching positions and his dramatically different personality from Ryan's likely made McDermott an attractive option for the Bills.

Two weeks after firing Rex Ryan, the Buffalo Bills have found his replacement.

The Bills finished the year 7-and-9 and missed the playoffs for the 17th straight season. He previously cut his teeth on Andy Reid's coaching staff with the Philadelphia Eagles as a defensive assistant, including as coordinator for two years.

In 2015, McDermott oversaw a unit that forced an NFL-leading 39 takeaways and ranked second in yards allowed.

"Sean McDermott is an excellent football coach and we feel he is the flawless leader for this team", Bills general manager Doug Whaley said.

McDermott interviewed for the Cleveland and Tampa Bay jobs a year ago that went to Hue Jackson and Dirk Koetter, part of a trend that saw all seven openings go to offensive coaches.

McDermott has served as the Panthers' defensive coordinator since 2001 and before that, worked his way up with the Philadelphia Eagles.

There has been much speculation in the media about McDermott's choices for offensive coordinator, but it is Buffalo's current wide receivers coach who has caught the attention of another National Football League team.

The Panthers will host the McDermott-led Bills during the 2017 regular season. The Panthers team went 15-1 and lost to Denver in the Super Bowl. Johnson passed away four days after McDermott was promoted.

The Bills also face a potentially significant roster overhaul with 24 players eligible to become free agents this offseason. That's kind of how I was as a player, and I ended up coaching the spring of my fifth year when [William & Mary] coach [Jimmy] Laycock approached me and asked if I wanted to give it a try.
