General Motors rumbles through the Detroit Auto Show

General Motors rumbles through the Detroit Auto Show

Whilst the marketing and PR departments become increasingly accustomed - or resigned - to planning annual back-to-back shows in Nevada and MI, senior management has been doing its best in recent weeks and months to plan for the impact of an all-new USA administration.

Last week, Trump targeted Toyota Motor Corp. and General Motors Co. for plans to invest in Mexico to produce vehicles for importation to the U.S.

Ford last week cancelled plans to build a 1.6-billion-dollar small-car plant in Mexico.

Ford Executive Chairman Bill Ford Jr. confirmed Monday he spoke with Trump last week before Ford announced its plan to invest $700 million in MI and bring 700 jobs to the state.

MI governor Rick Snyder also made an appearance.

Automakers emphasized their commitments to build cars and trucks in the US nearly as often as they premiered new vehicles in the first days of the Detroit auto show.

Even if they can count on US buyers, automakers aren't sure what to make of President-elect Donald Trump. There's many issues, as I said, we have much in common. When the automaker canceled the Mexican project, it said "two new iconic products" would be built at its Wayne, MI, factory where the Focus now is assembled. The automaker has 12 factories in the U.S.

Jurgen Stackmann, a member of VW's board of management, says VW is committed to the USA, and looks to 2017 to be a "restart" year after the scandal.

Three key executives in the USA auto industry's advance toward autonomous driving said they expect rapid progress in mobility technologies, legislation and regulation, and consumer acceptance in a paradigm shift that already has gained momentum in the last two years. If we started a drinking game where we had to take a shot every time someone said "mobility" this week, we would have died from alcohol poisoning on the first morning. GM will have new versions of its popular GMC Terrain and Chevrolet Traverse SUVs. All of the Cruze sedans sold in the US since the nameplate's 2010 debut have been made in Ohio.

The biggest hurdle toward electric vehicles becoming more widespread was a trade-off on batteries; as the range went up, so did the expense of the vehicle overall.

The NAIAS will feature industry preview days on Wednesday, Jan. 11, and Thursday, Jan. 12.

"We continually have to look at this as a global industry", Mendel said. "We saw the market trending toward CRVs and SUVs, and this vehicle reflects that in its design".
