PM Modi pitches for transparency in political funding

Addressing the concluding session of the BJP's national executive meet here on Saturday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi commended the party's "Karyakartas" for the gains in 2016 and urged them to keep up the good work and also gear up for the forthcoming Assembly elections in five states.

The party will use the occasion to burnish its pro-poor and pro-weaker sections credentials by citing several government schemes, including the recent sops announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

BJP president Amit Shah addressed the national executive on Friday. The second day of the BJP's national executive meeting will see the participation of former BJP Presidents, party Chief Ministers and around 350 party members.

At the meeting Shah also talked about electoral reforms and advocated simultaneous general and assembly polls.

He also noted that all surveys have given overwhelming support to the Government move and that the poor people are standing by Government.

With opposition parties levelling corruption charges at BJP leadership following the note ban, he asked party leaders to welcome criticism but they should remain unfazed by accusations even as he underlined his humble origins and had lived poverty.

Sitharaman said the Finance Minister also explained difference between 1997 Amnesty scheme by the then government, and the Income Declaration scheme.

He expressed happy that people of the country wholeheartedly supported the government's decision of demonetization despite difficulties.

In 45-50 minute address, the PM emphasised on the uplift of poor and the Government's priority to bring about a real and permanent change in their lives.

"Congress made people stand in queues for milk, ration and everything, which ended after Atal Bihari ji took over", he said.

The Kejriwal-led party has decided that after Punjab and Goa goes to election, two states where AAP is trying to increase its stake, AAP leaders will concentrate on exposing Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Uttar Pradesh.

Briefing the media, law minister Ravi Shankar Prasad quoted the PM to say, "BJP will be proactive in disclosing the source of its poll financing as there must be transparency in funds and people have every right to know about the source of money a political party receives". The economic resolution is likely to focus on demonetisation and black money and will analyse the ground situation in each of the five states heading for the polls.
