Democrats object, but can t stop official declaration of Trump victory

Several House Democrats Friday afternoon unsuccessfully tried to prevent Congress from certifying President-elect Donald Trump's Electoral College victory.

Jackson Lee, who sits on the U.S. House Judiciary Committee, said she and her staff has seen research alleging up to 50 members of the Electoral College might have improperly cast their votes on December 19, and she believes there is merit to it.

Trump will be officially sworn into office January 20th. Denver-area Congressman Ed Perlmutter indicated he might object during the vote count, but then quickly abandoned the idea.

The Texas Democrat said she plans to work with a senator, who she refused to name, on legislation to crack down on voter suppression this year.

Jayapal said she understands Biden's decision, but would have liked to have been given the opportunity to speak.

According to The Daily Caller, Five Washington Democratic electors did not vote for Clinton.

"Well, it is over", Biden said. Jamie Raskin (D-Md.) and Pramila Jayapal (D-Wash.) raised the first objection Friday after the joint meeting was gaveled to order.

At one point, Rep. Maxine Waters, D-Calif., implored one of them to join her objection.

"We worked pretty hard, if I say how hard it will reflect poorly on the effort", Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee of Texas, who led the member protests, told Morning Consult after the votes were tallied.

The response from Gore, who as the 2000 Democratic nominee was the person who stood to benefit from a successful challenge, triggered applause from congressional Republicans in the House chamber. But he added that Republicans were prepared in case an objection succeeded. George and Laura Bush let it be known they voted for "none of the above" for president rather than cast a ballot for Trump, but the ex-president did call to congratulate Trump after his victory. Not surprisingly, several protesters were ejected from the public gallery as the vote count concluded. "How much is known about the foreign disruption of our elections?"

Donald Trump received 304 electoral votes, while Hillary Clinton received 227. Clinton lost four Democratic electors in Washington state and one in Hawaii.

The way the law is designed makes it unlikely that there will be any change to the outcome of the election. We're never going to become complacent.
