As Trump targets Toyota over Mexico, Nissan faces bigger risk

President-elect Donald Trump has threatened Japanese carmaker Toyota with a "big border tax" if they build a plant in Baja, Mexico.

Ford also announced that it was canceling a 1.6 billion new factory in the northern state of San Luis Potosi, which had been criticized by Trump, though the company said the decision was business-related. "NO WAY! Build plant in USA or pay big border tax", Trump said in a tweet, his latest attack on auto manufacturers investing overseas rather than in the United States.

USA president-elect Donald Trump, who has been slamming automakers for selling cars made outside the United States, has threatened Toyota in his latest tweet, hours after lashing out at General Motors for its plans to make cars in Mexico other than US.

But the attack overnight on Toyota is his first against a foreign automaker.

The threat is similar to those targeted at Ford Motor Co. and General Motors Co.

Trump had also fired a broadside at General Motors, warning it could become subject to tariffs on Mexico-made cars for the United States market. "With more than US$21.9 billion direct investment in the USA, 10 manufacturing facilities, 1,500 dealerships and 136,000 employees, Toyota looks forward to collaborating with the Trump administration to serve in the best interests of consumers and the automotive industry", Toyota said in a statement.

Trump's outburst came hours after Toyota's president, Akio Toyoda, said the firm was not planning to reconsider its investment in Mexico.

"The environment is probably the best it's been in quite some time to actually have tax reform", Mark Fields, Ford's chief executive officer, said Friday at CES, formerly the Consumer Electronics Show, in Las Vegas.

President-elect Donald Trump claimed Wednesday that Sprint is moving 5,000 jobs back into the United States in an announcement from the steps of his estate in Palm Beach, Florida. Japan's second-largest automaker Nissan, which went to Mexico 50 year ago, now produces more than 800,000 cars in that facility. It exports roughly half of its output to the United States, where it also has production plants. On Tuesday, Trump also threatened GM with a border tax should it expand production of the Chevy Cruze to Mexico.
