Several people reportedly shot at Ft. Lauderdale Airport

Several people reportedly shot at Ft. Lauderdale Airport

Officials say a gunman killed five people at an airport in Florida before being apprehended by authorities.

The Broward Sheriff's Office responded to calls of a shooting at a baggage claim in Terminal 2 about 12:55 p.m., authorities said.

Between 80,000 and 100,000 passengers travel through Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International daily. "Anyone who observes any suspicious activity should report it to airport personnel or police", Guglielmi said in an email.

Senator Bill Nelson of Florida claimed the gunman was carrying military ID in the name of Esteban Santiago, but that it was unclear whether it was his. During the shooting, Sheriff Scott Isreal said shots were only fired on the downstairs floor of terminal 1.

Law enforcement officials have yet to determine a motive for the attack, though Broward County Sheriff Scott Israel believes that he acted alone.

Investigators have the suspect in custody and are now trying to figure out the gunman's motive for the mass shooting, law enforcement expert Jim Cavanaugh told reporters.

Update 3:50pm ET, Jan. 6: Police say five people have died, eight others suffered injuries. Authorities said in an afternoon press conference Santiago was a passenger on a Canada flight and had a legally-checked gun in his luggage.

A Southwest flight from Fort Lauderdale is scheduled to arrive tonight. "People were trying to run", Lea told MSNBC. They announced that the airport has "closed and will be for an extended period time". The Federal Aviation Administration has put in a ground stop for flights around the country that are destined for FLL, they are are being held on the ground at the origination airport.

News helicopters hovering over the airport showed crowds of people standing on the tarmac outside, according to the Associated Press.

Further, President-elect Donald Trump tweeted, "Thoughts and prayers for all". Air Canada also said no checked guns were onboard any flights to Fort Lauderdale.

Former White House spokesman Ari Fleischer tweeted that he was at the airport when shots were fired, but that the scene had since calmed.

President-elect Donald Trump tweeted that he's "monitoring the awful situation in Florida".

Her family, who are visiting from New Zealand, had picked her up from the airport and were "well clear" before the incident.
