Ankara Expects Trump Administration to Stop Supporting Syria's Kurds

Ankara Expects Trump Administration to Stop Supporting Syria's Kurds

Ankara has said three soldiers are being held in Syria, but warned that there is no evidence to confirm the authenticity of the video. "But there is the reality of a confidence crisis in the relationship at the moment", Cavusoglu said.

Turkish backed anti-government rebels continue to fight ISIS in Northern Syria, as pro-Assad forces gather to siege remaining jihadist strongholds.

But the attack was also unique in that it was claimed by ISIS in a formal statement - the first time the group has made a clear and undisputed boast of a major strike in Turkey, despite being blamed on several occasions.

The Kurdish YPG, which constitutes the backbone of the SDF forces that fight ISIS in northern Syria, is viewed by Turkey as a terrorist organization.

Turkish officials said they are considering shutting down an air base being used by North Atlantic Treaty Organisation allies in a bombing campaign against the Islamic State over a disagreement about a lack of allied support for Turkey's own military campaign in the Middle East.

When Turkey launched their military operations in Syria in October, they code named the incursion near Aleppo "Operation Euphrates Shield".

He said the Turkish people are wondering about the continued presence of US forces at Incirlik, given that the U.S.is not supporting Turkey's most significant operation.

USA military officials are baffled at the Turkish refusal of air support.

Ibrahim Kalin told Turkey's 24 channel on Thursday that he was under the impression that an administration under Trump would "pay more attention to Turkey's sensitivities".

"The [Syrian] opposition forces that are with the support of the Turkish forces are carrying out a significant effort against ISIL [Daesh] and we think that's a good thing", Cook stated. As the coup attempt failed, a high-ranking Turkish officer walked across the Incirlik airfield and tried to turn himself into the USA military to seek asylum.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers began construction in 1951 of what was to become Incirlik Air Base, and U.S. and Turkish air forces signed an agreement in 1954 for joint use of the base. Tactical nuclear weapons are believed to be stored at the base, an allegation the Pentagon has always denied.

Relations between Ankara and Washington were also marred by the US' reluctance to approve Turkey's extradition request for exiled Muslim cleric Fethullah Gulen, who Erdogan accuses of fomenting the July coup attempt.
