'Watership Down' author Adams dies aged 96

Richard Adams, author of Watership Down, has died aged 96.

Juliet Johnson told The Associated Press on Tuesday that Adams died on Christmas Eve. The website for Watership Down Enterprises, the entity that manages the rights to Adams's works, also issued a statement announcing his death.

"Richard's much loved family announce with sadness that their dear father, grandfather, and great-grandfather passed away peacefully at 10 p.m. on Christmas Eve", read a note on the official Watership Down website.

Richard Adams wrote the world-famous story of a group of young rabbits escaping from their doomed warren, set in the Hampshire countryside. The book won the Carnegie Medal for children's fiction in 1972 - the first year it was publiched, despite having first been rejected by four publishers and three writer's agencies.

Eventually, his daughters encouraged him to put the tale down on paper, and the literary debut became a best-seller.

Born on 9 May 1920, Adams did not begin writing until he was in his 50s and working for the civil service.

"You needn't worry about them", said his companion. The author said the storyline had its roots in tales he related during long auto trips to his two young daughters, who urged him to write them down.

He wrote many other novels about his childhood and youth, as well as about a period serving in the army in wartime. During World War II he served in Palestine, multiple countries in Europe as well as the Far East but saw no direct action against either the Germans or the Japanese.
