Christmas weather to calm down after Storm Barbara

Christmas weather to calm down after Storm Barbara

The country is bracing itself for the arrival of Storm Barbara with warnings of 90mph winds and hard travelling conditions as people make their way home for the holidays.

Weather forecasters have predicted winds of up to 90mph will gust through northern and western parts of Scotland, including Inverness and Fort William, on Friday and have issued an amber "be prepared" weather warning.

With wind warnings in effect until 6pm this evening and further wind and rain already forecast for Christmas day and beyond, it looks like the miserable weather is going to hang around for the foreseeable future thanks to the latest storm on the block.

"We have had the good fortune to be able to issue the weather warnings ahead of Storm Barbara coming, with plenty of time hopefully for people to change their plans if they need to".

Severe weather warnings have been issued for much of the United Kingdom, with the storm already causing power cuts, school closures and travel delays as it sweeps across the country from the Atlantic.

Ferry operator Caledonian MacBrayne said more than half of the company's network saw services cancelled for the duration of Friday while others were suspended and under constant review for any weather windows.

The worst conditions are expected to be felt in the far-north of the country, but disruption is also expected in the south where the storm is forecast to bring a narrow but intense band of heavy rain and gusty winds.

"For Christmas Eve there is a north/south split across the UK".

A spell of heavy rain will accompany the strong winds during Friday morning and afternoon will bring poor driving conditions and some surface water flooding. "The main impact will be in Scotland, but there are warnings out for northern England".

"On Christmas Eve England and Wales will get away with a much drier and brighter day".

Not only this, power supplies may also be affected.

Temperatures on Christmas day are expected to be the warmest, at between 12C and 15C, since records began, dashing any hopes of a White Christmas for another year.

The number is available to people in England, Scotland and Wales, regardless of who they buy electricity from.
