Meyers Leonard on DeMarcus Cousins: 'I Can't Respect Someone Like That'

Meyers Leonard on DeMarcus Cousins: 'I Can't Respect Someone Like That'

DeMarcus Cousins carried the Kings over the Blazers with an incredible offensive performance, but it came with a whole lot of drama.

Within hours of the team announcing it fined Cousins for an interaction with a member of the media, the Kings center dropped 55 points and withstood an apparent second technical in helping Sacramento defeat the Trail Blazers 122-119. Cousins also was ejected briefly when it was thought he had thrown his mouthpiece toward Portland's bench after making a shot, but the decision was reversed when the referees met to discuss what happened.

Cousins walked off the court at the end of the game still furious at the technical foul (and subsequent ejection) handed to him with 30 seconds left. In fact, Cousins had to be separated from the columnist inside the locker room.

The Jazz appeared to be on cruise control when they extended a 10-point halftime lead to 20 at 62-42 midway through the third quarter. Come on back, Boogie. Soon after, the referees inexplicably un-ejected him, and summoned him back from the locker room. "That was a weird sequence". No intent. I would never spit on anybody.

Cousins returned to a roar, made a free throw, then blocked a shot on defense on Portland's next possession to help the Kings hold on.

Cousins issued a canned apology Tuesday, to his bosses, not to the actual object of his venom - "There is a time, place and manner to say everything, and I chose the wrong ones". "I can see why people would be mad". "His mouthpiece flew out".

"Whether it was intentionally spitting it out or not, I don't know the intention. I'm not like that". Stotts said Cousins didn't, and the referees rescinded the technical. Angry Boogie and National Basketball Association officiating are good for the blowhard business. But Cousins directing his ire at Leonard, who was sitting on the bench late in a close game was an unlikely twist for a feud that has been statistically one-sided. For some odd reason, we're sympathizing with him, just this once.

"It's ridiculous. It's obvious what's being done out here". It's a nightly basis.

"I hope the world can really see what's going on out here, because it's getting ridiculous, it's really ridiculous, " he raged.

So, again, Cousins has invited commentators of all abilities to psychoanalyze him, and we'll only hear fleeting mentions of what he did against a quality opponent.

Cousins scored 33 points and grabbed nine rebounds but Leonard comes away with the best highlight - a massive, one-handed dunk - and the victory.
