Massive fireworks explosion in Mexico leaves at least 12 dead

AN explosion has ripped through a fireworks market in Mexico, reportedly injuring at least 50 people.

The cause of the explosion remains unclear and the area remained risky. He also warned people not come within three miles of the building, for the explosion had damaged nearby structures. The city is commonly referred to locally as the "fireworks capital".

A government official told Reuters that at least 10 people were killed at the open-air San Pablito Market in Tultepec, in the State of Mexico.

The city's San Pablito Market saw another series of explosions in 2005, when fireworks exploded in the market's stalls.

According to the report, Azteca TV is reporting that 12 people died as a result of the explosion.

This BNO News video shows the moments following the immediate explosion with clouds of smoke billowing from the building.

Tultepec is north of Mexico City and is famous for its fireworks industry.

Luis Felipe Puente, head of national emergency services, said the number of injuries could rise in the approaching hours. And in 2006, another fire destroyed hundreds of stands at the same market.
