Crazy Catch Sends YSU To Title Game

Rader's catch, which is being hailed as the "catch of the year" but sports writers and television hosts, was made against an EWU defender's back.

Key Stats: JMU limited the Bison to a season-low 132 rushing yards (on 39 carries) after it averaged just over 300 yards in its two playoff wins.

In the snow on Eastern Washington's red turf, Youngstown State had the ball at the five-yard line with six seconds left in the FCS playoff semifinals, a spot in the championship game on the line. The ball was snapped to signal caller Hunter Wells, who stood strong in the pocket and rifled a pass in to his tight end, Kevin Rader.

The university said that five football players graduated Sunday.

Tevin McCaster rushed for 154 yards and three touchdowns for Youngstown State, which will be seeking its fifth national title.

Youngstown State great Ron Jaworski calls it the greatest catch in FCS history.

Youngstown State may have pulled off the Play of the Year in college football Saturday with its game-winning score vs.

Eastern Washington leads FCS with an average of 411 passing yards per game behind quarterback Gage Gubrud, while Youngstown State allows only 182 passing yards per game.

In his final collegiate game, Kupp finished with 180 receiving yards on 10 receptions, catching two touchdowns.

They'll head to Frisco, Texas, for the January 7 national championship against James Madison, who upset five-time national champion North Dakota State on Friday, ending the Bison's streak. EWU has now lost in the semifinals three times in four appearances under head coach Beau Baldwin, advancing to the finals and winning the national championship in Baldwin's second season in 2010. Put it all together and it's hard to imagine that there's ever been a bigger reception in school history. In the 24-team FCS bracket, Youngstown State was not one of the eight teams seeded, and the catch gave the Penguins the road upset win over the Eagles.
