Rescuers finish search of Indian train wreck, 133 dead

The Railways also made a decision to not run more trains where 100 or more trains are already running, sources said, and to phase out the traditional ICF coaches by next year.

Local residents of Pukhrayan assisted in the rescue operations till dusk while school buses were brought in to ferry those who were injured in the accident to nearby hospitals for treatment.

The mishap took place just a little after 3 am on Sunday when the passengers were jolted out of their sleep as the Patna-bound train 19321 jumped the tracks, badly damaging four ordinary sleeper coaches in which hundreds were trapped.

As he watched his brother's cremation, Mr Sinhu said he did not know exactly what happened, but was sure who was to blame.

By Monday morning, they had searched the last of the 14 wrecked cars, but had yet to lift the coach from the tracks to see if more bodies had been trapped beneath. The rescue efforts were going on until late. Since the accident, some trains passing through Kanpur have been cancelled and others have been diverted to stations to the north and south. Some told local media they suspected faulty tracks.

"I was asleep and suddenly woke up to a deafening noise, after which I found myself thrown on the floor of the coach", Amit Krishna a witness said. I went out and saw the coach my family was in had broken into three pieces.

The hospitals around Kanpur in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh have been flooded with dozens of victims, many severely injured and in a state of shock.

Authorities said they were checking the condition of the tracks but would need to look further before concluding the cause of the derailment, India's deadliest rail tragedy since more than 140 died in a 2010 collision in West Bengal. The ministry released helpline numbers for the anxious relatives, who were worried for their kins travelling in the train.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to Twitter to express his condolences.

There is no doubt that since taking charge, Minister for Railways Suresh Prabhu has been working overtime to revamp the archaic safety regime of Indian Railways, but it's a long exercise that requires both patience and money.

The train's passengers are being questioned in connection with the probe but as the incident occurred around 3 AM majority were asleep and are not in the state to provide details, he said.

India's railway system, the world's fourth largest, carries about 23 million people every day.

Train accidents are relatively common on India, and are mostly blamed on poor maintenance, outdated equipment and human error. The tragedy is not so much that railway mandarins have failed to act; it's that they have not acted despite being fully aware of the shortcomings in our safety standards.

"The rescue operations were called off around 2 p.m. today (Monday)", Railways spokesperson Anil Kumar Saxena told IANS in Delhi.

According to the Rail Board's statistics over 800 accidents were reported between 2009-10 and 2014-15 in which 620 people and over 1,800 were injured.
