Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp chalks Southampton draw down to worldwide break

Liverpool only burst into life following Mane's two chances at the end of the first 45, and that marked the start of a flurry of Liverpool chances after the break. It was a really good performance against a difficult-to-play side - Southampton are one of the best organised teams in the league.

Liverpool stayed top of the English Premier League despite a frustrating 0-0 draw at Southampton, where Juergen Klopp's team couldn't get past goalkeeper Fraser Forster on Saturday.

"Tell me two other Premier League clubs, or Bundesliga clubs, who will lose this quality and next year you will think again "oh yes, they have it again".

Firmino had the best chance of the game on 66 minutes, collecting a pass from Coutinho in his stride before poking a shot beyond Forster and, crucially, the Southampton upright.

"I think he would have been more expensive if we had taken him to Dortmund and then he had been sold to Liverpool, so all good for Liverpool!" Everybody could see already this season that on a very good day, we are able to score fantastic goals. "And when you lose a lot of games as a football player you don't feel good, because you want to win games to feel good and have confidence". "I am happy with the attitude and the spirit among my players".

The result means that just two points now separate the top four, but Klopp believes that the proximity of the top teams is a good thing. Result not ideal but performance much better than expected. And when you play a draw it's better that you should have won than that you should have lost.

The Reds will get a chance to get back to winning and scoring ways next week when they welcome David Moyes' Sunderland (who themselves beat Hull 3-0 today) to Anfield.

Philippe Coutinho went for a precautionary scan on a tight hamstring Thursday, and will be assessed late before it is decided whether he travels or not.

Liverpool star Adam Lallana will miss his side's next two or three games after picking up a groin injury on global duty last week.

Both sides were without key creative players, with Southampton midfielder Dusan Tadic not risked after breaking his nose while on global duty. "I like the player, it was more of a feeling", he said.

Lovren was jeered every time he received the ball in an early spell of Liverpool possession that forced the home side back towards their own penalty area. We would have taken no risk - 100 per cent not.
