You can stop WhatsApp from sharing your data with Facebook

You can stop WhatsApp from sharing your data with Facebook

'The phone number associated with a user's WhatsApp account will be used on Facebook to show them ads.

In response, Information Commissioner Elizabeth Denham said: "The changes WhatsApp and Facebook are making will affect a lot of people".

Two years after being acquired by Facebook, the messaging service WhatsApp said it will coordinate more with its parent company to make it easier for businesses to communicate with its users.

Facebook, which owns WhatsApp, insists it will not tell advertisers which users interacted with their ads.

When Facebook bought WhatsApp for $16 billion back in 2014 its founder Jan Koum promised users that their data would be protected. You can find the account tab that exists in the app settings menu and uncheck the box that says "Share my account info" to stop feeding Facebook with your data. WhatsApp's end-to-end encryption ensures that neither the company nor third parties can read users' messages, and that messages aren't stored after they've been delivered, according to the new terms.

WhatsApp will begin sharing user data with Facebook for advertising purposes. Whatsapp users will be notified of the change to the private policy as Facebook will be able to target audiences better with advertisements.

Its policy on encrypted messages would also remain the same. You could hear from a "bank about a potentially fraudulent transaction", WhatsApp says on its blog, ignoring the fact that banks already contact customers about this.

Luckily, users of the social media service do have the option of opting out of some of the data sharing.

In its relations with regulatory authorities, Facebook and WhatsApp are damned if they do, and damned if they don't.

"There's always an issue when a service changes its terms, especially one which plays in the mobile space since it's harder to push terms and harder to read them when on the move", he said.

More than one billion people use the service and will be informed as of today as to changes in the app's terms and conditions.
