MS community grieves over loss of nuns

The Holmes County Crime Stoppers chapter had initially put up $2,500, so the total reward money is now $22,500.

He said Merrill would want him to forgive whoever killed the women, but he hopes the perpetrator is arrested, convicted and executed.

"In regards to the two nuns killed today in Durant, my heart is broken for the two families and friends of these treasured souls". Authorities arrived at the home, saw evidence of a break-in and found two bodies, she said. The nuns worked as nurses at the Lexington Medical Clinic, where Dew was the office manager. Dew.

Sister Paula Merrill, a nurse practitioner with the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth, in Kentucky, and Sister Margaret Held, a nurse practitioner with the School Sisters of St. Francis, in Milwaukee, were stabbed to death, authorities said.

Mississippi Department of Public Safety Spokesperson, Warren Strain says the nuns' missing vehicle was located late Thursday night behind a grocery store on Mill Street, about a mile away from where they lived.

Durant Assistant Police Chief James Lee says his department received a request around 10 Thursday morning to make a wellness check at this home on Castalian Springs Road, after the two women didn't come to work.

"She doesn't deserve to die like this, doing God's work", Morgan said, shaking his head. "Their vocation was helping the poor", said Plata, who oversees a 35-member Catholic church the sisters attended.

Abboud said the clinic provided about 25 percent of all the medical care in the county, which has a population of about 18,000, according to U.S. Census Bureau estimates for July 2015.

He says the sisters' work as nurses dignified the poor.

"It's so senseless", Rev. Greg Plata, who oversees the small church the nuns attended, said. "They treated each person as a child of God".

The sister of a nun who was killed in rural MS says her sister was called to "serve the underserved".

"We always considered Margaret just part of the family", he said. She said her sister and Held would often go into the clinic on Sundays after Mass or on their days off.

"They were two of the sweetest, most gentle women you can imagine".

Rosemarie Merrill says her sister moved to MS in 1981.

"She was a wonderful representative of a Christ-like care for the poor", O'Loughlin said.
