United States routs China in men's basketball

United States routs China in men's basketball

Kevin Durant, the United States' 2010 FIBA Basketball World Cup MVP, led the way with 25 points as the Americans thrilled the crowd with a rout of last year's FIBA Asia Championship winners.

Holdovers Carmelo Anthony and Kevin Durant are the only returning players from the 2012 gold medal winning squad, while China counters with former NBA player Yi Jianlian and Zhou Qi, a second round pick in the 2016 NBA Draft. Those opinions won't change after this performance.

Carmelo Anthony is the first United States men's basketball player to play in 4 Summer Olympics.

And beyond the Olympics, nearly anytime that he's been needed for qualifiers or FIBA world championships, Anthony has answered the call, appearing in 12 Dream Team editions, playing in 72 games for the USA, amassing 1,100 points (15.3 per game) and 289 rebounds.

China features former National Basketball Association center Yi Jianlian and 2016 second-round draft picks Zhou Qi and Wang Zhelin.

But the Americans didn't come to Rio de Janeiro for fun and sun.

"We know how hard it is to win", Durant said. PG played over about 18 minutes and finished with 15 points, three assists, three rebounds and a couple of nice dunks.

Bogut shot 9-for-10 from the field and Patty Mills had 21 points. The U.S. Team is set to play against Venezuela on August 8. "We have some great players here", Durant said. But the USA players say they aren't thinking that way. The players level of celebrity doesn't allow for the same level of privacy in the Village as other athletes are afforded so Team USA has elected since 1992 to find their own accommodations.

Durant had 25 points and six assists, and at that rate, Durant could surpass his American scoring record of 156 points in one Olympics.

He said he was upset about missing it, adding "that would have been my (third) if I played in that one".

There were flags waving and fans singing, the festive scene in the stands more interesting to watch than the game.

Speaking of long balls, Kyrie Irving went nuts in the third quarter after being the only American to fail to score in the opening half. China was never a threat, but the awkwardness of that lineup hearkened back to the old days of USA Basketball, when second-tier star players struggled to play together against teams with better chemistry in tournaments like this.
