Booing and bellowing, a different kind of tennis fan in Rio

Booing and bellowing, a different kind of tennis fan in Rio

Novak Djokovic suffered a second Olympic Games defeat in the space of 24 hours when he and Nenad Zimonjic were knocked out of the men's doubles.

The top-ranked Djokovic was swept out of the singles tournament at the Olympics in the first round Sunday by the 2009 U.S. Open champion 7-6 (4), 7-6 (2) in a result that left both players sobbing.

His two disappointments came hot on the heels of a crushing third-round loss to Sam Querrey at Wimbledon and his status as top dog in the sport is under threat. "That's sport", said Djokovic, whose Olympic singles record is stalled at a bronze from Beijing in 2008.

An Argentina supporter and Brazil fan were snapped scrapping in the stands as Del Potro saw off the Portuguese star 6-3 1-6 6-3.

"To be able to give back to them from a court and not from a clinic or a hospital is the best way", - Del Potro, who has been plagued by wrist trouble in recent seasons. "I played really well at the end of the match and I think that was the key".

The tournament, which starts August 13, is the only Masters 1000 tournament that Djokovic has not won.

Still, del Potro said of Thursday's match: "I had doubts in the beginning, and I got myself into a mess". The decisive act found del Potro pulling the strings and eventually capping the set with 6-3.

The number one -seeded United States tennis player struggled for quite a while last night, before emerging with a 7-6 (7-5) 6-2 victory over France's Alize Cornet, despite making 36 unforced errors and getting broken four times.

Wimbledon champion Murray, the second seed, clinched an eighth win in eight meetings against Serbia's Viktor Troicki, 6-3, 6-2.

These two faced off for bronze in London four years ago, with del Potro winning.

A day after Djokovic and two other No. 1 seeds were beaten - including Serena and Venus Williams in women's doubles - things were far quieter Monday afternoon.
