University of California, Davis, Chancellor Linda Katehi Resigns Amid Controversy

University of California, Davis, Chancellor Linda Katehi Resigns Amid Controversy

She writes that the chancellor has now offered to resign and that resignation has been accepted.

Napolitano, who suspended Katehi in late April and ordered the investigation, wrote that the probe "found numerous instances where Chancellor Katehi was not candid, either with me, the press, or the public, that she exercised poor judgment, and violated multiple University policies". She is returning to teaching.

She faced the fiercest scrutiny for spending hundreds of thousands of dollars on consulting firms to erase search results for a 2011 incident of police pepper spraying student protesters.

University of California President Janet Napolitano announced this afternoon that she has accepted the resignation of UC Davis Chancellor Linda P.B. Katehi, according to the Davis Enterprise. Katehi also increased her daughter-in-law's supervisor's pay by 20 percent and placed her son's research position under the supervision of her daughter-in-law's department.

Details about the investigation will remain confidential while in progress.

Interim Chancellor Ralph Hexter will stay on until the university finds a permanent replacement. The contracts also aimed to eliminate other negative postings and improve UC Davis' image.

According to President Napolitano, University officials are now beginning a nationwide search for a new chancellor. Chancellor Katehi advised President Napolitano that there were "no issues" related to the employment of her family members. Guzman says Katehi had little knowledge of the contracts.

On a campus and in a community used to chancellors with a common touch such as that possessed by Katehi's immediate predecessor, Larry Vanderhoef, and stretching all the way back to the likes of Emil Mrak and Jim Meyer, Katehi at times seemed distant and cold.

But, regarding the allegation that companies were paid to "scrub" the internet of negative references to her and the school, Katehi says the investigation found the contracts appeared to be mostly for the goal of producing positive content.

Despite Katehi never asking permission to accept the position, Napolitano originally defended Katehi for taking a $70,000-a-year seat on the DeVry Education Group board - a for-profit education company that is being investigated for fraud - as relatively common for university senior staff.

"Regrettably", the president writes, "Chancellor Katehi refused to resign and made public statements to campus leadership and others that she meant to remain as chancellor".

The release continues that she did not violate policies regarding student fees, she had no involvement in the line item budgets involved and there were no policy violations or management concerns.

"These past three months and the events leading up to them have been an unhappy chapter in the life of UC Davis".

The Chancellor's announcement came after the release of an investigation report by outside counsel to the University of California that found no policy violations in the areas of alleged nepotism, conflicts, financial mismanagement of funds or personal gain.
