U.S. relay win gives Phelps his 21st Olympic gold

Instead, superb camera work captured natural drama: Le Clos stealing looks at his obsession in the pool, Phelps waving his index finger and motioning the crowd to cheer after he won his 20th gold medal. His first event was the Men's 100m freestyle relay where he won the first gold medal of the Summer Games. There wasn't a shot in hell I was losing that race tonight. "Just being able to see the number one next to my name again, one more time in the 200 fly, I couldn't have scripted it any better".

After the Americans lost the 4x200m freestyle relay to the British at the world championships a year ago, this was one they wanted to get back.

"I told Bob [Bowman, his coach] when I came back how bad I wanted that 200m fly", added Phelps.

There were a lot of head games being played between Michael Phelps and South Africa's Chad le Clos, who beat him in the event four years ago in London.

Oldest American Olympian medals: Phillip Dutton of the United States, who had come within one fence of an individual medal in every major championship since 1994, won bronze in eventing.

Phelps made up for one of the rare losses in his brilliant career by winning the 200-meter butterfly Tuesday night, a victory that sent him climbing into the stands to kiss his 3-month-old son Boomer. She recorded a winning time of 1:53.73, 0.35 seconds ahead of Sweden's Sarah Sjostrom.

Phelps, Jack Conger, Gunnar Bentz, and Ryan Lochte combined to give Phelps his 21st gold medal. Phelps announced his retirement after the 2012 Olympics.

"It's insane to think about", Phelps said. A lung-bursting event that most swimmers hate, it has always been his favorite race, but one in which he still thought he had a point to prove.

And as for Rio, Ledecky still has the Women's 800m freestyle to compete in on Thursday, so she may not be done just yet!

"That hurt pretty badly", Ledecky said after the race.

"Having that come to an end is weird, it's insane to think about. I'm just so glad I got my hand on the wall first, it was all worth it".
