Man on "neighborhood watch" fatally shoots man, charged with murder

"I'm going outside to secure my neighborhood".

CNN reports that as Copley entered the court room for his hearing, he winked at his family before the judge assigned the capital defenders office to defend him.

It appears that prosecutors are considering the sentiments Copley expressed during his 911 calls as evidence of premeditation.

Chad Copley told the 911 operator to send a police auto fast - he was "locked and loaded", he said, and going outside to confront a group of "hoodlums". It's 1 o'clock in the morning, um, there's some vandalism.

After completing their initial investigation the incident, Raleigh Police Department detectives obtained an arrest warrant charging Copley with murder.

He continued: "I'm on neighbourhood watch".

"I lost somebody that I can't even put in words how much they've taken from us", said Kristian Williams, the victim's other brother.

That's when Copley shot and killed Thomas.

"I yelled at them, 'Please leave the premises.' They were showing a firearm, so I fired a warning shot and, uh, we got somebody that got hit", he said. They have firearms and we're gonna secure our neighborhood.

The dispatcher asked: "You're going to do what?" He said that he "fired a warning shot" but couldn't be sure whether anybody had been hit. While the details are still coming in, friends of Thomas explained to the Raleigh News & Observer that they ended up in Copley's neighborhood for a party. They have firearms, and we're going to secure our neighborhood.

Authorities report that those neighborhoods that do have neighborhood watch programs should call police and wait for instructions instead of taking violent actions like Copley chose to do.

Denkins' mother told reporters that, according to accounts from other people in the area of the shooting, her son was fleeing and "they couldn't catch him, so they shot at him seven times". "If I were you, I'd send PD as quickly as possible".

"We didn't know that it came from the house".

You never fire a warning shot.

In another of the 911 calls released by police, an unidentified man can be heard saying, "They shot him from the house".

"I brought my kids down here when they were babies because I didn't want to have my children raised in NY. They do have firearms, and I'm trying to protect myself and my family", the man replies.

The dispatcher asks who is outside his house, and the man says he doesn't know but there's a party at a nearby home. Please, send PD. Thank you, " he went on to say.

The witness says the 20-year-old victim was shot in the arm, is unconscious and lying in the road.

Twenty-year old Kouren-Rodney Thomas was on his way to a house party with friends Sunday evening when a neighbor spotted the boys and pegged them as "hoodlums". His mother, Simone Butler-Thomas, described him as a comedian who had worked at a Waffle House since 2014.

As for whether Copley was acting in a neighborhood watch capacity, Hourigan said there were many such groups in the community, but she is "unsure if that one is a registered group or not".

Thomas had a job at McDonalds, a girlfriend attending East Carolina University, and was weeks away from moving into his first apartment, she said.
