Holt sparks 8th inning rally as Reds beat Cardinals

The Cardinals were one out away from being blanked on Monday before erupting for five ninth-inning runs to post a 5-4 victory. The winning run came across when Yadier Molina was hit a pitch with the bases loaded, helping St. Louis pull into a tie with Miami for the National League's second wild card.

The Reds are highlighting individual successes in an otherwise disappointing campaign and got three hits and four stolen bases from center fielder Billy Hamilton on Sunday.TV: 8:15 p.m. ET, FSN Ohio (Cincinnati), FSN Midwest (St. Louis) PITCHING MATCHUP: Reds LH Cody Reed (0-6, 7.30 ERA) vs. Cardinals RH Michael Wacha (7-7, 4.35) Reed is still looking for his first major-league win and was ripped for five runs in as many innings in a loss to St. Louis on Wednesday.

Molina started the inning with a leadoff single, but Tony Cingrani (2-4) retired the next two hitters. After a walk of Votto, Adam Duvall broke his 18 at-bat hitless streak with at two-run single.

Matt Holliday's solo homer in the fifth tied the game 3-3.

Eddie Rosario had three hits, and Jorge Polanco and Danny Santana added two hits apiece to lead Minnesota, which won for the seventh time in nine games. He then scored from second on an infield hit by Billy Hamilton after Cardinals second baseman Matt Carpenter bobbled a barehanded attempt to get the speedy Hamilton at first.

David Dahl, facing left-hander Jake Diekman, opened the Rockies ninth with a single, extending his hitting streak to 14 games to start his career.

Neither starter - Reds' lefty Brandon Finnegan nor Cardinals right-hander Mike Leake - was particularly sharp, but neither was hurt too badly by their inabilities to find the plate. Finnegan walked six (one intentionally) and struck out five. "That one was more important than a simple win". That's something I feel comfortable in. Reed, who hacked up four first-inning runs, has permitted 13 runs in the first inning of his eight starts. "I'm going to come out next time and get you".

Leake, who was traded to the Giants at the trade deadline in 2015 and signed with the Cardinals as a free agent this offseason, had made two starts against the Reds this season, both at Great American Ball Park.

The Cardinals closed their locker room for about 10 minutes to discuss temporary parking arrangements in preparation for the Paul McCartney concert Saturday at Busch Stadium. "It was a fun situation as a pitcher, a chance to really make a difference for us, so it was disappointing when it doesn't happen".

Reds: RHP Anthony DeSclafani (6-0, 2.94 ERA) is coming off a no-decision against Pittsburgh in which he gave up two runs in six innings.

Reds: RHP Alfredo Simon (right trapezius) and RHP A.J. Jaime Garcia takes the hill, and he's 8-8 with a 4.04 ERA and 110 strikeouts this season. He drove in the lone run of that game with a single and allowed just three hits.
