'He Just Flat Out Lied'

Chris Christie made his first public comments on the latest George Washington Bridge lane closure scandal revelations a short time after the news broke a former aide had accused him of having "flat out lied".

Christie cut ties with Stepien in January 2014 after a almost two-hour news conference in which he apologized for the lane closures but denied any knowledge of them or a cover-up.

The aide, Christina Renna, texted as Christie spoke on December 13, 2013 and denied his top staffers and former campaign manager Bill Stepien closed lanes near the bridge in September 2013 as an act of political retribution, according to a filing by an ex-ally under indictment.

Christie said on Wednesday that the accusations that he lied were not true.

In Tuesday's filing, attorney Michael Baldassare hinted there are many more texts still to be revealed.

Mr. Christie, encountering reporters outside a Manhattan radio studio after a guest-host stint on a sports-talk program, called the text-message matter "ridiculous". "He just flat out lied about senior staff and [campaign manager Bill] Stepien not being involved".

A former aide to Governor Christie said the governor lied about his knowledge of his administration's involvement in the George Washington Bridge lane closures, according to a new court filing. It came to light in court filings by lawyers for one of the defendants.

"There's nothing new to talk about", he said, according to a video of the exchange posted by the Associated Press. "And if emails are found with the subpoena of (campaign) emails are uncovered in discovery if it come to that it could be bad". According to NJ.com, the filings show that Renna deleted the texts after the New Jersey state legislature began issuing subpoenas. Stepien, who led the now-defunct Intergovernmental Affairs unit before Kelly, was Christie's re-election campaign manager at the time of the lane closures.

Henry Klingeman, an attorney for Ms. Renna, said: "Ms. Renna will answer questions publicly when she testifies at the upcoming trial, not before". A third Christie appointee, David Wildstein, pleaded guilty and is cooperating with the government.

Stepien's attorney, Kevin Marino, said it was "categorically false and irresponsible" to implicate his client in the bridge affair "based on a text message that has been in the government's possession for years". Kelly stands trial next month in federal court on Bridgegate charges alongside Baroni, the former Port Authority official.

Christie fired Kelly in January 2014 but Renna left the administration on her own shortly after and joined the Chamber of Commerce South Jersey, a pro-business lobbying firm, where she is now vice president, according to her Linked In profile.
