Delta systems still not totally up and running

The company faced widespread cancellations and delays after a power failure knocked out its computer system about 2:30 a.m. Monday in Atlanta (11:30 p.m. PDT Sunday).

Many hotels were booked and rental cars were taken, leaving few options for stranded travelers.

Delta also extended a travel-waiver policy to help stranded passengers rearrange their travel plans.

The world's largest airline attempted to get back on schedule Wednesday after a two-day outage caused trouble for flights around the globe, but the carrier again ended up scrapping more flights than it expected.

Delta CEO Ed Bastian posted an online video apology to Delta customers.

Delta operates 5,000 departures a day and is a member of the SkyTeam alliance alongside airlines including Air France-KLM.

Airlines "are a little bit further behind than other technology industries", said Matt Goldberg, vice president of global solutions for SevOne, a digital infrastructure management firm. Recent federal rules limit the amount of time airlines can keep passengers on the tarmac during delays but there are no rules on refunds or payouts except for when flights are overbooked.

Delta is based in Atlanta.

And, as airlines continue to push customers and employees toward computer-based automated systems, there's no human backup in place either.

The airline, which has been scrambling ever since a six-hour global shutdown on Monday, said it is starting Wednesday with about 150 canceled flights across its system. On Tuesday, about 800 flights were canceled, less than the 1,000 flights canceled Monday. Many customers have already been contacted by Delta agents, the airline said.

The Atlanta-based carrier said a $200 voucher was available to anyone whose flight was canceled or who was delayed by more than 3 hours.

"We were able to stabilize the universal power and quickly restore power, but when that happened, some of our network equipment did not switch over to the backup system", Edwards said Wednesday.

Confusion among passengers Monday was compounded as Delta's flight-status updates crashed as well.

Delta's challenge Tuesday was to find enough seats on planes during the busy summer vacation season to accommodate the tens of thousands of passengers whose flights were scrubbed. But the local utility company, Georgia Power, was quick to fire back saying it was actually Delta's equipment that had failed.

Tamia Cannon, whose flight was running five hours late, told WESH 2, "I could have been sleeping in my bed, but I have to be here now".
