CCMA steps in to defuse Eskom wage dispute

CCMA steps in to defuse Eskom wage dispute

"Separately, Eskom and the three unions - namely NUM, the National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (Numsa), and Solidarity are in discussions in an effort to find an amicable resolution on their wage demands".

The union is set to meet with Eskom at 10:00.

"Eskom has placed the Koeberg power station manager and the plant manager on precautionary suspension as a result of the distribution of documentation containing unauthorised facts and assumptions relating to Koeberg's Production Plan and in particular, the steam generator replacement", said the utility in a statement.

Paris Mashego, NUM's energy sector coordinator, told Reuters that wage talks with the utility had deadlocked.

Zapiro's perspective of the top team at the State-owned utility Eskom. "The information was given to a said party and it might actually compromise our position as we go through this constitutional court matter", he said, declining to identify who received the information.

Eskom spokesman, Khulu Phasiwe reiterated Eskom's stance that all employees are prohibited by law from striking.

Workers are demanding an increase of between 8.5 and 10 percent while Eskom is standing firm at a 7 precent increase.

Phasiwe also said NUM members early on Monday morning had blocked roads leading to the Arnot power station east of Johannesburg but police had been called in and the roads were now clear.

All NUM affliated Eskom workers - around 15 000, which is about a third of its workforce, were expected to down tools at all 27 power stations.

Workers at Eskom embarked on a full-blown strike to demand decent wage increases between eight to 10 percent, and a 3,000 rand (about 225 USA dollars) housing allowance.
